This campaign was born from the need to draw from every possible resource in our industry to find homes for loving pets. Shelters are not doing the job, and no organization presents better information regarding the No-Kill Movement than the No Kill Advocacy Center.
America is a nation of cat and dog lovers. Shelters are expected to provide these animals with a second chance, but instead, millions are being needlessly killed every year. For far too long, we have been told the following: There is no other way. Killing is exclusively the public's fault. Shelters, through no fault of their own, are merely performing the public's dirty work with skill, compassion, and dedication. Nothing could be further from the truth.
This year, roughly four million dogs, cats, and countless other animals will be put to death in our nations' shelters. Their only “crime” is that they have no human address. But there is hope!
In the last decade, several progressive shelters have put into place a bold series of lifesaving programs and services, dramatically reducing the death rate. The resulting success proves that there is a formula, and if we are to achieve a No-Kill nation, it is incumbent upon shelters nationwide to embrace the programs and services proven to save lives.

Best Friends Animal Society is guided by a simple philosophy:
Kindness to animals builds a better world for all of us.
In the late 1980s, when Best Friends was in its early stages, roughly 17 million dogs and cats were killed in shelters every year. Despite the commitment of shelter workers, the conventional belief was that little could be done to lower that terrible number.
Best Friends is acknowledged as one of the most recognized animal welfare organizations in this country. They speak for and guide hundreds of rescue groups. Currently, they are not supporters of pet stores, as can be seen by their Puppies Aren't Products campaign, but hopefully their prospective will change!
Best Friends' No More Homeless Pets campaign created a new vision: A grassroots effort began to place "unadoptable" dogs and cats into good homes, and to reduce the number of unwanted pets through effective spay and neuter programs. Since then, the number animals being destroyed in shelters has fallen to approximately 5 million a year. Much has been accomplished, but there is still more to do.

Helen Woodward Animal Center is recognized as the future for shelters. Mike Arms, President, believes that the term 'pounds and shelters' needs to be removed from the public’s vocabulary. They paint only negative images. When pets are housed and presented in an environment, as represented in his animal center, the prospect of hope and loving care are exhibited. Plans for expansion are underway, and the conceptual drawings are worth reviewing
